What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma refers to a group of diseases that affect the optic nerve and are characterized by a progressive loss of optic nerve fibers, cupping of the optic nerve head, and characteristic visual field defects. This condition is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide.

An elevated intraocular pressure (above 21 mmHg) is the main risk factor for glaucoma. However, in some cases, no elevated intraocular pressure is detectable. This condition, known as normal-tension glaucoma, is believed to be caused by other risk factors such as altered blood flow in the eye and immunological factors.
